(1986) Musical by Andrew *Lloyd Webber, with lyrics by Richard Stilgoe and Charles Hart. It is based on a much filmed book by the French detective writer Gaston Leroux (1868–1927), about a hideously disfigured man, concealing his face behind a mask, who abducts an opera singer with whom he has become obsessed. The original production starred Sarah Brightman, Lloyd Webber's wife at the time, and Michael Crawford.
