(5km/3m E of Llangollen) Cast-iron aqueduct by *Telford, carrying the Shropshire Union Canal over the valley of the Dee. Barges move along in a great metal gutter, 307m/1007ft long and resting 37m/121ft up in the air on 19 stone arches. This extraordinary feat of engineering was begun in 1795 and completed in 1805. Telford was simultaneously (1796–1801) building a shorter and lower aqueduct, to a similar design, to carry the canal over the Ceiriog valley at Chirk.
