Plymouth Brethren
|
|
Christian sect deriving from a congregation established in Plymouth in 1831. Particular emphasis is laid on the text of the Bible and on the imminence of the Second Coming of Christ. The most influential leader was John Nelson Derby (1800–82), whose followers split from the main body (known subsequently as the Open Brethren) to become the Exclusive Brethren. The latter are so strict in their righteousness that they reject contact with anyone outside the sect, including even members of their own families.
