(42,000 in 1991) City on the west bank of the river Tay, flanked by two large riverside parks, North Inch and South Inch. The nine-arched bridge crossing the river just downstream of North Inch was built in 1766-71 by *Smeaton.
Deriving its early importance from the proximity of *Scone, Perth was considered the capital of Scotland in the 13–15C. The sermons preached here against idolatry in 1559 by John *Knox (in the 15–16C church of St John) unleashed the wave of iconoclasm which destroyed Scotland's religious art and sculpture. It was in Perth, in 1600, that the *Gowrie Conspiracy occurred.
