(1909–95) Tennis player who was Wimbledon champion for three successive years (1934–6) and who is still, 60 years on, the most recent British player to win the men's singles. He also won the championship in the USA (1933, 34, 36), Australia (1934) and France (1935), becoming the first player to win all four major titles – three of them in 1934, leaving him just one short of the first grand slam. He was world champion at table tennis in 1929 before beginning his tennis career.
