Morte d'Arthur
|
|
(c.1470) Prose narrative in English, printed by *Caxton in 1485, which brought together many separate strands of the legend of King *Arthur, taking them from French sources. Nothing is known of the author beyond what he himself reveals in the closing words of his text – that he is Thomas Malory, a knight, writing in 1469–70 while in jail. The most likely candidate is a knight of that name in Warwickshire, who was much in and out of prison in the 1450s for violence, theft and rape.
