(9km/6m NW of Tunbridge Wells) Rambling house of many periods, famous for its great hall, known as the Baron Hall, which was built for Sir John de Pulteney in the 1340s. Its superbly carpentered roof timbers are unusual in being of chestnut rather than oak. The house contains excellent early portraits of the Sidney family, into whose possession it came in 1552 – just two years before Sir Philip *Sidney was born there.
