penny dreadfuls
|
|
Sensational stories of gruesome events (the equivalent in print of *melodrama), serialized from the 1830s in weekly parts costing a penny. They made heroes of historical characters such as Jack *Sheppard and Dick *Turpin, and added memorable inventions of their own, notably *Sweeney Todd. They fed the same Victorian appetite for fiction which at a higher level enabled *Dickens and others to be published in a similar weekly fashion.
