peel tower

(also called just a peel, and often spelt pele) Fortified house consisting of a square thick-walled tower, usually with a vaulted chamber on the ground floor for cattle and living accommodation above. Built in the 13–16C, peel towers are characteristic of both sides of the Scottish border.
