Major company which has developed from a Yorkshire firm described in the mid-19C as 'sanitary tube and brick makers and contractors for local public works in and around Bradford'. Under the leadership of Weetman Pearson, the first Viscount Cowdray (1856–1927), the family firm extended its construction activities abroad – in particular to Mexico, where it acquired valuable oil interests. Subsequent diversification has led to major newspaper holdings (in particular the *Financial Times and a half share in the *Economist). The firm has been quoted on the Stock Exchange since 1969, when the family first sold a share of the equity to the public.
