(1801–65, kt 1851) Son of a small farmer, he was appointed in 1826 superintendent of the gardens at *Chatsworth. It was there that he designed the Great Conservatory, making possible his sudden leap to fame with the *Crystal Palace. The commission for *Mentmore Towers soon followed. In 1854 he became MP for Coventry, as a Liberal, and held the seat until his death.
