Paston Letters
|
|
The largest and most detailed body of correspondence surviving from the 15C. The letters were written by three generations of the Paston family, whose rise in Norfolk society was hastened by their unexpected inheritance of Caister Castle. But their good fortune also brought years of turmoil, as local aristocrats backed up their lawsuits against the Pastons with attempts by bands of armed men to evict the upstarts. The letters provide a stark insight into the anarchy of England in the century of the *Wars of the Roses, together with fascinating details of family life and household economy. Most of the original letters are now in the British Library.
