Hubert Parry

|
(1848–1918, kt 1898) Composer known in particular for his choral works, such as Blest Pair of Sirens (1887), a cantata for chorus and orchestra to words by Milton. He has achieved a lasting place in British popular culture with his setting of Blake's *Jerusalem. First performed in the middle of World War I (in 1916), with a choir singing in unison about 'England's green and pleasant land', this was tailor-made for its present status as almost an alternative national anthem. It is a feature of the last night of the *Proms and is much sung by large crowds cheering English teams at sporting events.
