Parliament Square
The name of squares in Edinburgh and London, both of which are flanked by ancient cathedrals and parliament buildings.
*St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh has High Street (part of the Royal Mile) to the north and is surrounded by Parliament Square on the other three sides. To the west stood the Old Tolbooth, known as the *Heart of Midlothian, demolished in 1817. To the south is *Parliament House. And to the east is the Mercat Cross, the centre of the city's public life in the Middle Ages and still the site for royal proclamations.

Parliament Square in London is more recent, laid out in the mid-19C as a suitable approach to Barry's new *Houses of Parliament, with *Westminster abbey on the south side. The grass in the centre has statues of distinguished statesmen, that of Winston Churchill by Ivor Roberts-Jones (b. 1913) being the most recent addition, in 1973.
