parliamentary privilege
|
|
Freedom of speech and freedom from arrest were the privileges fought for by *parliament in its long struggle with the crown. Today the only privilege of importance is that a member is not liable to the law of slander on any statement made in parliament, nor can the reporting of it in print be prosecuted as libel. The privilege ceases to apply if the same statement is repeated outside the Houses of Parliament.
