Papplewick Pumping Station
|
|
(11km/7m N of Nottingham) The most perfect surviving example of the lavish care with which the Victorians embellished their machinery. The pumping station was opened in 1884 to improve Nottingham's water supply, using two great beam engines (designed by the firm founded originally by James *Watt). These survive unaltered and in working condition, housed in a shrine-like setting of cast-iron ornament and stained glass. The exterior of the building is no less chapel-like, reflected romantically in the waters of its functional cooling pond.
