(1914–92, kt 1991) Polish-born British composer who had been conductor of both the Cracow and Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestras before he left Poland in 1954 and settled in Britain. The wide range of his compositions included, unusually for a contemporary composer, no fewer than ten symphonies. His tenth was commissioned by Georg *Solti to commemorate the 1991 centenary of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
