Samuel Palmer
|
|
(1805–81) Painter known in particular for a series of small agricultural scenes with figures, painted in his twenties with an intensity of detail and a richly vibrant light which invariably causes them to be described as visionary. They were painted at Shoreham, in Kent, where Palmer lived from 1827 to 1834. He was the leading member of the Ancients, a group inspired by medieval themes and by the example of William *Blake. Other members included John Linnell, George Richmond and Edward Calvert.
