Pall Mall
|
|
(London SW1) Street of clubs housed in grandiose buildings – among them the *Athenaeum, the *Travellers', the *Reform and the *Royal Automobile Club. It was laid out as a road in 1661 on the site of a pall mall alley. The game of pall mall, fashionable in Restoration London, combined elements of croquet and skittles; a ball was struck with a mallet to run down an alley and through a metal hoop.
