(1814–99, bt 1871) Surgeon at *Bart's who is considered one of the founders of pathology. His name remains in everyday medical use through two conditions, each known as Paget's disease, which he was the first to identify; one, a chronic eczema around the nipple, is an early indication of cancer; the other, also called osteitis deformans, is a bone disease which results in deformity.
