Paddington

London's main *railway station for trains to the west, built for the Great Western Railway in 1850–4. The station itself, with a roof of glass and wrought iron supported on wrought iron pillars, was by Brunel and was partly inspired by the contemporary example of the *Crystal Palace. The Great Western Hotel was designed at the same time by Philip Hardwick, the architect of *Euston. Paddington replaced the original terminus of the GWR, a wooden structure a few hundred yards to the west which had opened in 1838.
