Ozymandias

|
(1818) Sonnet by *Shelley, one of the best-known short poems in the language. A massive statue of the Egyptian pharaoh Rameses II, recently acquired by the British Museum, inspired Shelley with his image of mile upon mile of desert surrounding a fragment of just such a monument, bearing on its base the inscription: 'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'
