Publishing house with a continuous history from 1690 (there had been Oxford printers from the 1580s, but not under the direct control of the university). An early and profitable venture was *Clarendon's History (3 vol., 1704). In the second half of the 19C the press undertook two major projects of lasting importance, the *Oxford English Dictionary and the *Dictionary of National Biography. The *Oxford Book of English Verse (1900) became the most influential anthology of modern times, while such works as the Oxford Companion to English Literature (1932) and the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations (1941) established a tradition of popular works of reference on a wide range of subjects. Over the centuries the Bible has been OUP's bestseller, but it is followed in second place by the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (1948, with four editions and sales of 16 million copies by the 1990s). *Hart's Rules were originally the internal guidelines for Oxford's printers.
