Oxford Street
|
|
(London W1) Street which in the late 19C acquired London's highest concentration of department stores (*John Lewis and *Selfridges are the two main survivors). Today it is the capital city's centre for mass-market retail and is correspondingly crowded. Originally a main route west from the old city of London, and known sometimes as the 'road to Oxford', its name nevertheless became established for a different reason – in 1713 the earl of Oxford bought the land on the north side of the road.
