Oxford accent
|
|
An old-fashioned phrase sometimes used, inaccurately, to mean *Received Pronunciation. In use from the early 20C, it was often derogatory in intent – the tones of Oxford undergraduates being considered affected and divisive. Winston Churchill was praised in 1940 for 'lacking the Oxford accent' and speaking 'as a Briton to Britons'.
