The Oval
|
|
(London SE11) The county ground of *Surrey County Cricket Club, and – with Lord's – one of the two most regular locations for *Test matches. The area was already called the Kennington Oval, from the shape of the surrounding streets, before it was turned into a cricket ground in 1845. That same year the Surrey club was founded, and it played its first county match at the Oval (against Kent) in 1846; the first Test match here was in 1880 (against Australia). The most historic moment on the Surrey pitch has been *Hutton's record Test score for England in 1938.
