(20km/12m W of central London) House built originally for Thomas *Gresham in the 1570s, and extensively remodelled by Robert *Adam in 1761–80. The façade acknowledges the span of two centuries, with the redbrick Tudor corner towers linked by a pillared portico, but the superb interiors are entirely of the 18C. The sequence of state rooms survives as a virtually unaltered display of the *Adam style.
