(1929-94) Playwright whose *Look Back in Anger (1956) brought a breath of much-needed fresh air into the English theatre and saddled him with the reputation of being the leading *angry young man. He followed it immediately with an equally brilliant play, The *Entertainer; subsequent successes included Luther (1961) and Inadmissible Evidence (1964). He published two volumes of characteristically candid autobiography – A Better Class of Person (1981), Almost a Gentleman (1991).
