Peter and Iona Opie

Husband and wife team (Peter 1918–82, m. 1943 Iona Balfour, b. 1923) who made a major contribution to the study of children's folklore and literature. They published in 1951 the definitive study of nursery rhymes (The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes). Travels round the country to record the present-day activities of children, many of which are firmly rooted in the past, resulted in The Lore and Language of Schoolchildren (1959) and Children's Games in Street and Playground (1969).
