Character in *Hamlet and the subject of a painting in the Tate Gallery by *Millais, who depicted her floating to her death in a stream, garlanded with flowers, as described by Gertrude in the play. Millais painted the flowers and stream from nature, according to strict *Pre-Raphaelite principles. The figure was Elizabeth Siddal (later the wife of *Rossetti) lying in a bath of water, kept warm by lamps beneath it.
