The Open
|
|
The world's oldest international *golf championship, played annually since 1860, when the first event was held at *Prestwick. The only missing years have been during the two world wars and in 1871. The reason for the lack of contest in 1871 was that the original trophy, a championship belt, had been won outright in 1870 after three successive wins by Tom Morris (he and his father, also called Tom Morris, had between them won 7 of the first 11 championships). The Open resumed in 1872 with the present trophy, the famous silver claret jug, donated jointly by Scotland's three leading clubs, Prestwick, the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers and the Royal and Ancient. The contest was originally played over 36 holes, but since 1892 has been over 72 holes.
