Ondine

(1958)
Ballet by Frederick *Ashton, setting the story of Undine (1811, by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué) to music commissioned from Hans Werner Henze. The part of Ondine, a sprit of the waters who has no soul until she marries a mortal and bears his child, was created by Margot *Fonteyn with sinuously liquid movements; her lover, Palemon, was danced by Michael *Somes.
