They include Growltiger, the barge cat who is the Terror of the Thames; Old Deuteronomy, an ancient cat; Skimbleshanks, the railway cat; and above all Macavity, mystery cat and Napoleon of Crime. The book was reissued in 1940 with illustrations by Nicolas Bentley (1907–78).
