(London EC4) The name commonly used for the Central Criminal Court, being that of the street on which it stands. In 1902 *Newgate prison was demolished to make way for this building (by E.W. Mountford, opened 1907). Central London's *Crown Court sits at the Old Bailey, hearing criminal cases, whereas the High Court sits at the *Law Courts in the Strand.
