(1775–1847) Irish lawyer and politician whose election to parliament in 1828 prompted the *Emancipation Act – passed because civil war seemed likely in Ireland if he was prevented from taking his seat. He was also the first to agitate for *Home Rule, in a series of massive popular gatherings throughout Ireland in the early 1840s. In the tradition of radical politics of the time he became known (like *Bolívar in South America) as the Liberator.
