Britain's oldest Sunday newspaper, founded in London in 1791 by a young Irishman, W.S. Bourne. It entered its most distinguished period when a polemical journalist, James Garvin (1868–1947), became editor in 1908 – a post he retained until 1942, becoming famous for his lengthy political editorials. The paper was owned for much of the 20C by the Astor family. It was bought in 1981 by *Lonrho and in 1993 by the *Guardian.
