Captain Oates
|
|
(Lawrence Oates, 1880–1912) Member of Captain *Scott's expedition to the Antarctic, who won a lasting place in the nation's memory by the understatement of his last words. Knowing that his frost-bitten feet were delaying the party in their desperate struggle back to safety, he walked out of the tent into a blizzard with the remark 'I am just going outside and may be some time'.
