Nostromo
|
|
(1904) Novel by *Conrad about a fatal obsession with a horde of silver. In an imaginary South American country in the throes of revolution, Martin Decoud (a journalist) and Nostromo (an Italian adventurer) are asked to remove bullion from a silver mine for safe keeping. With great difficulty they manage to get it to an island, where they bury it. Decoud goes mad and drowns himself, weighted down with silver. Over the years Nostromo returns to the island to retrieve it bit by bit, stealing it for himself; Charles Gould, manager of the mine, has accepted the story that it was lost at sea. When Nostromo is shot on the island, mistaken for a casual intruder, the secret of the silver dies with him.
