Monument

(London EC2)
Designed by Wren, the Monument was erected by order of parliament in 1671–7 'to preserve the memory of this dreadful Visitation' (the *Great Fire). The inscription states that the fire began 202 ft (62m) to the east, and that 202 ft is the height of the column. It is surmounted by a flaming urn of gilt bronze, and 311 steps bring visitors up to a balcony beneath the urn. The panel in relief at the base (1673-5) is by Caius Gabriel *Cibber.
