Northwest Passage
|
|
The quest for a sea route north of Canada to the Pacific tantalized explorers, many of them British, for five centuries. Among the best known have been *Frobisher in the 16C, *Hudson in the 17C, *Cook, who explored from the Pacific side in the 18C, and *Franklin (credited now as its discoverer) in the 19C. The first to complete the passage, in a 3-year voyage (1903–6), was the Norwegian Roald Amundsen.
