(BBC 1969–74) The outstanding example of zany humour in television revue, with a status similar to The *Goon Show on radio. Outstanding among the author-performers were John Cleese and Michael Palin, and their *dead parrot sketch has become the single most widely remembered item. The material was deliberately fragmented, making much use of its famous catch phrase to move rapidly from nowhere in particular to somewhere else – 'And now for something completely different'. The graphics, characterized by a boot descending to obliterate the previous image, were the work of Terry Gilliam – another of the author-performers on the series.
