Historically the county town of the north *riding of Yorkshire and since 1974 the administrative centre of North Yorkshire. The town has held a weekly agricultural fair since 1205. The 12–13C church of All Saints, with a fine *Perpendicular tower, survives little changed from that period apart from its Victorian chancel.
