(New Musical Express) The main newspaper of British pop music, published every Saturday. A previous Musical Express folded in February 1952. Two weeks later it was relaunched by a London agent, Maurice Kinn, as the New Musical Express. An early innovation was Britain's first chart based on the sale of records rather than sheet music. The paper was well established in time to champion the distinctively British pop of the early 1960s, with the arrival of the Mersey sound and the Beatles.
