(James Graham, 1612–50, 5th earl of Montrose 1626, 1st marquess 1644) The most brilliant of the royalist commanders in Scotland during the *English Civil War. In 1644 he rallied the clans in the Highlands and won a rapid series of victories in the north until support drained away after the defeat of Charles I at *Naseby. From exile in France he returned to Scotland in 1650 to raise support for *Charles II, but he was captured and subsequently hanged in Edinburgh.
