1922 Committee
|
|
The entire body of *backbenchers in the Conservative party. It takes its name from a meeting of Conservative MPs in the *Carlton Club in October 1922. Though chaired by Austen *Chamberlain, the meeting voted against his policy of remaining in *Lloyd George's coalition government – a decision which caused his downfall as leader of the party. This sudden taste of power suggested the need for an organization through which backbenchers might continue to exert influence. The executive of the Committee meets weekly when the House is sitting and the chairman, a senior member of the party, has direct access to the leader.
