Simon de Montfort
|
|
(c.1208–65) Leader of the more radical barons against his brother-in-law *Henry III (de Montfort had married the king's sister, Eleanor, in 1238). He defeated and captured Henry at Lewes in 1264, but lost baronial support when he then ruled as a military dictator. To provide another base for his authority he summoned in 1265 his famous *parliament, calling to Westminster knights from the shires and citizens from the towns. Later that year he was defeated and killed at Evesham by an army led by the king's son, the future *Edward I.
