Benedictine monastery on a hill about 140km/85m southeast of Rome, of great significance both in Christian history and in *World War II. The monastery is considered the cradle of western monasticism, for it was the headquarters of St *Benedict himself in the 6C. The monastery buildings (of the 16–17C) were a key feature in the Gustav Line of defence, at which the Germans delayed by several months the Allied advance up Italy in 1944. In the course of the fighting the monastery was entirely demolished, together with many of its treasures. It has been rebuilt to the same design.
