Nickname which became attached to Haydn's Mass in D minor. News of Nelson's great victory over Napoleon at the Battle of the *Nile reached Austria on 15 September 1798, the day of the mass's first performance. Austrians, to whom Napoleon was the enemy, immediately attached Nelson's name to the piece – which Haydn himself called Missa in angustiis ('mass in troubled times').
