National Youth Orchestra
|
|
Organization founded in 1947 by Ruth Railton (b. 1915) for teenagers (every player must be under 20) who are not in full-time music education. It is formed anew each year from auditions held in September. The new orchestra, 150 strong, begins to rehearse after Christmas and reconvenes for rehearsals and performances in each of the school holidays. As evidence of the orchestra's extremely high standard, it has long had an annual engagement at the Proms and since 1990 has played on BBC TV accompanying the finalists in the Young Musician of the Year competition.
