(London WC2) Collection begun in 1856 with the intention of assembling portraits of people distinguished in British history. From miniatures by *Hilliard to contemporary paintings by Lucian Freud and others, they are often also of artistic importance. In recent years portrait photographs by distinguished photographers have been included. The building, adjacent to the National Gallery, was designed for the purpose by Ewan Christian (1814–95) and opened in 1896. A number of portraits from the collection are on long-term loan for display at Beningbrough Hall near York, at Gawthorpe Hall in Lancashire, at Bodelwyddan Castle in Clwyd and at *Montacute House.
